Welding Methods for Steel, Iron & Other Metals
Depending on the project you are working on, there are several different approaches that you can take with welding. The technique used will depend on the outcome you are looking for. Here are the different techniques that professionals will use.
– Intermittent: This type of welding is often referred to as stitch welding or skip welding and is used when construction is trying to save on material costs. When a welder uses intermittent welding, rather than using one long, continuous weld, there will be short and spaced out welds. The only thing that is vital with this technique is accurate measurements.
– Stringer Bead: When a welder uses the stringer bead technique, they will drag or push the weld along a joint to create a robust weld. If you are working with a narrow joint, this is a great technique to use. It is extremely important that the welder is sure that the electrode has fused with the original metal or else the strength and durability of the joint won’t be there.
– Backstep: On thin or delicate areas, it isn’t uncommon to see some metal distortion. To avoid this problem backstep welding will be used. This technique involves traveling back to the previous bead deposit in an oval pattern before continuing forward to ensure there is no distortion there. This is a more complicated technique for sure but can be incredibly helpful.
– Weave Bead: This is an ideal technique to use when you’re working with a wide joint. The welder will work in a side to side pattern to make sure that the entire joint is covered.
– Multi-Pass: The multi-pass technique is another one that is helpful when you’re working with a wider joint. The welder will pass by a joint many times to make sure there is coverage and strength there. This is often used in heavy duty applications.
– Tack: To keep everything in place throughout the welding project, welders will often use tack welding which is small, temporary welds that will keep everything exactly where it needs to be.
